Product Description
Each book in this three-book series is filled with practical, classroom-tested ideas for teaching mathematics with a problem-solving approach. All lessons encourage children to work cooperatively; explain their ideas; listen and question one another; and agree on solutions. Classroom vignettes describe lessons in vivid detail, and samples of actual student work are included throughout. Most lessons implement the use of manipulative materials to help children think about and reflect on mathematical ideas. Part I in this book includes six lessons that integrate ideas from different strands of the math curriculum, including algebra, measurement, probability, statistics, and logical reasoning. Part II provides two sample replacement units with a two- to three-week study focus, one on the area of a circle and the other on percents.

5 out of 5 stars Great to Supplement Curriculum   August 10, 2010

I teach 5th and 6th grade GATE (Gifted Students) and was looking for lessons that we could do as a supplement to our standards-based curriculum. I want my students to have fun with lessons but still have them tied to the standards and force them to think "outside the box." I've used more than a few lessons out of here and have had compliments from students who like the group work.
Just a tip: this is not a "lesson plan" book, she will describe in vignettes how she taught lessons. So you really have to read the lessons carefully and decide how you will teach the lesson. Takes a lot more thought than today's scripted teacher books!
